Engineering

The registered office as well as Head Office is located at 4 Gangadhar Babu Lane, Kolkata – 700 012. The Managing Director is the executive head of the institution. The Engineering Section is headed by the Chief Seed Processing Officer & Ex-officio Executive Engineer who looks after all the Civil, Electrical & Mechanical works and the Seed Processing Plants running all over West Bengal. Business of different agricultural implements like Tractor, Power Tiller, Reaper, Drum Seeder, Laser Land Leveller etc. are dealt by the Engineering Section of this Corporation. There are 4 nos. Go-down having Air-condition and dehumidifier facility at Maynaguri (Jalpaiguri), Bankura, Suri (Birbhum) and Midnapur.

Seed Processing & Storing

WBSSCL has installed seed processing plant (large/ medium/ small plant) in each District Unit on the basis of its production potentiality. The processing plants installed at WBSSCL, Midnapur and Burdwan unit are large in capacity. The processing plant setup at WBSSCL, Malda, Nadia, Jalpaiguri and Bankura are medium in size. The small size portable processing plant has been placed among the rest of the districts. The processing and grading machine have been also installed simultaneously with the processing plant at Burdwan and Midnapur, WBSSCL, Hooghly is earmarked for packeting of vegetable seeds in small size packets.

WBSSCL is having seed go-downs in each unit @ one or more as per volume of seed business presently doing by its units. Some plants are owned and others are hired. The scientific seed godown has already been constructed by WBSSCL, Midnapur, Burdwan, Nadia, Malda, Jalpaiguri and Bankura for maintaining hygienic condition of seed storing. The remaining numbers of the go-downs are hired and utilized for storing of seeds in good condition.

The WBSSCL has constructed two de-humidified seed stores (conditional godown) at WBSSCL Midnapur and Jalpaiguri; of which the de-humidified seed store located at Midnapur is larger one having capacity of seed storing in terms of Wheat & Paddy 1000 – 1200 tonnes and in terms of Groundnut for 500 tonnes. The de-humidified godown located at Jalpaiguri having two separate compartments one for de-humidified store having capacity for storing 250 MT seeds in terms of Wheat & Paddy and another compartment having capacity of vegetable seed storing for 100 MT. Another de-humidified go-down is constructed at WBSSCL, Birbhum with the capacity of 700 MT. One de-humidified go-down still under construction for 2000 MT at WBSSCL, Bankura.

Present status of Seed Processing:

  • Undertaken multiplication from Breeder to Foundation and Foundation to Certified in the growers field mainly, Crops are then procured and sent to Processing Plants for seed processing.
  • During processing unwanted/ foreign materials such as pieces of straw/crop residues, small stones, mud and other such material are separated along with impurities in the crops liked shrivelled and undersized grains, chaffs and dust.
  • After processing seeds are being collected in separate bags, seed treating chemicals are put in the bags and stacked for collection of sample for testing as per certification process.
  • WBSSCL has 15 Processing Plants of its own at different locations across the state of West Bengal.
